Wikipedia:Featured topics/Roman invasion of Africa (204–201 BC)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Second Punic War between Rome and Carthage had been raging for 13 years when Publius Cornelius Scipio, Rome's most successful commander, was assigned to Sicily in 205 BC with the intention of invading the Carthaginian homeland in North Africa. Scipio's army landed the following year and won four pitched battles in three years, the last against the previously unbeaten Hannibal. Carthage was forced to agree a humiliating treaty in 201 BC and thereafter it was clear that Carthage was politically subordinate to Rome.
