The Ōtautahi Christchurch monthly meetups are a chance for Wiki people (Wikipedia, Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons, Wikisource, and so on) to get together, get advice, get collaborations started. Everybody's welcome, beginners or experienced.
- Tūranga, Cathedral Square
- Sunday, 3 August 2025
- 12pm midday
This month's event we're shaking it up a bit and doing an informal shared editing session! Come along and get stuck into some wiki-work, or learn from other editors about the things they're working on.

What have we been up to?
[edit]- Giantflightlessbirds: Visited Hobart and talked to a couple of people at the Museum of Old and New Art about a possible Wikipedia collaboration. Gave a public talk on Wikipedia at Kaikōura Museum and ran a workshop on using Wikipedia as an outreach platform with a selection of heritage, District Council, and tourism people—a possibility there'll be more collaboration in the future. Attended the Cantage meetup morning and chatted with Helen Brown of Okains Bay Museum / Ngāi Tahu archives about a visit from one or more Wikipedians.
Upcoming events
[edit]- Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 August: Akaroa Wiki Weekend. Editing and meetups at the Akaroa Museum, Coronation Library, and Akaroa Library. Wikipedians are welcome to come over for a day or part day, and coordinate with Mike on what's happening.
Outcomes and tips
[edit]- Have been tipped off that the article on Deon Swiggs (current ECan Deputy Chair) was written by a political ally, so we should examine it for balance. —Giantflightlessbirds (talk) 05:10, 31 July 2025 (UTC)
- Discussed a variety of topics, including:
- Copyright status of photos of the Queen, and possible strategies for getting freely licensed images of the royal family
- Plans for an Akaroa event and an Ashburton event
- Organising a possible "Wikipedia 101" session for interested people involved with local history. Possible venue would be the Tūranga computer studio. Could advertise though local orgs and facebook groups.
- New Pages Patrol and how to be welcoming to new users without compromising on article quality.
- VRT for copyright issues on Commons
