The 2025 Russia–United States Summit (also known as the Alaska 2025 or the Trump–Putin Summit) is a scheduled summit meeting between United States President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. It is scheduled to be held on August 15, 2025, in Anchorage, Alaska. It will be the first meeting between Trump and Putin since Trump was re-elected in 2024 and first since their last meeting in 2019 in Osaka. The main topic of discussion will be the ongoing Russia–Ukraine war, which Trump intends to end.[1][2] It will be the first time that the summit between Russia and the United States would be hosted in the United States since the Governors Island Summit in 1988 rather than in Russia or any third countries.

Background

US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin at the G20 summit in Osaka, Japan, June 2019

During the 2024 presidential election, Donald Trump campaigned with a promise to end the Russia-Ukraine war as soon as possible, preferably Day One, but that date passed. On February 12, he held a surprise phone call with Putin which kick-started peace negotiations for the first time since 2022. Later that month, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio began meeting with Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov in Saudi Arabia, a neutral country that hosted Putin.

So far in the course of his second presidency, Trump's communication with Putin aside from phone calls has been on Truth Social. His stance began with an olive branch extended, saying in January he's "not looking to hurt Russia".[3] Trump has discussed his phone calls as "constructive", but as time went on he slowly embraced the idea Putin was "tapping him along" or drawing out negotiations. He told reporters on July 23 that he'd talk to Putin, then his wife would say another Ukrainian city was bombed.[4]

Donald Trump's truth social posts became more "emotional" as the Kremlin called them.[5] In addition to posting in all capital letters; "VLADIMIR, STOP!" he has called repeatedly to an end of the "BLOODBATH". In response to his proposal, a Kremlin aide confirmed the talks, musing that Alaska was "quite logical" for a venue.[6]

During an Oval Office meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on July 14, Trump announced that the U.S. would impose 100% tariffs on countries that do business with Russia if no peace agreement was reached within 50 days.[7] During a meeting with U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer on July 28, Trump announced that the deadline would be shortened to 10 or 12 days, citing a lack of progress in negotiations.[8] U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff met with Putin in Moscow on August 6, two days before the set deadline.[9] Following the meeting, Trump stated that there was a "good chance" that a meeting with Putin would take place "very soon."[10]

Meeting

Trump has said it is not necessary for Putin to meet with Volodymyr Zelenskyy, president of Ukraine.[11] He also said that both sides will have to make concessions, but a Kremlin source stated that Russia could halt the war if they received eastern Ukraine.[12]
