Overview of the events of 2025 in rock music
This article summarizes the events related to rock music for the year of 2025.
Scottish rock band Franz Ferdinand releases their sixth studio album, The Human Fear , their first in seven years, following Always Ascending (2018). It charts in the top 10 of 5 national album charts, including topping the Scottish albums chart .[ 1]
Many rock bands perform at FireAid , a two day benefit concert to help raise funds for those affected by the January 2025 Southern California wildfires . Performers include Green Day , Red Hot Chili Peppers , No Doubt and Alanis Morissette .[ 2]
Nirvana also reforms for a surprise brief performance at FireAid . The lineup included bassist Krist Novoselic , drummer Dave Grohl , rhythm guitarist Pat Smear , and four separate female vocalists in place of frontman Kurt Cobain . St. Vincent performed the song "Breed ", Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth performed on "School ", Joan Jett performed on "Territorial Pissings ", and Grohl's daughter Violet Grohl on "All Apologies ". The performance is one of only a handful of reformations of the band after their breakup in 1994, following the death of Kurt Cobain .[ 3]
The 67th Annual Grammy Awards are held. Classic rock acts perform well; The Beatles win Best Rock Performance for one of their final recordings to be released - "Now and Then ", while The Rolling Stones win Best Rock Album for their first album in 18 years, Hackney Diamonds .[ 4]
St. Vincent wins three Grammy Awards - "Broken Man " wins Best Rock Song , "Flea " wins Best Alternative Music Performance , and All Born Screaming wins Best Alternative Music Album .[ 4]
Dream Theater releases their 16th studio album, Parasomnia . It is their first studio album with original drummer Mike Portnoy since Black Clouds & Silver Linings (2009).[ 5] It debuts in the top 10 of 13 separate national album charts .
Welsh rock band Manic Street Preachers releases their 15th studio album, Critical Thinking .[ 6] It debuts in the top 2 of the UK and Scottish album charts .
Japanese rock band One Ok Rock releases their eleventh studio album, Detox .[ 7] It debuts at number 2 of the Japanese national albums chart .
English metalcore band Architects releases their eleventh studio album, The Sky, the Earth & All Between .[ 8] It was produced by former Bring Me the Horizon keyboardist Jordan Fish . It debuts in the top 10 of 6 separate national album charts .
English musician, Jojo Orme, known professionally as Heartworms released debut album Glutton for Punishment to universal critical acclaim including a five-star review from NME and 91 out of 100 Metascore from Metacritic .
Australian heavy metal band Thornhill releases their third studio album, Bodies . It is their first studio album without guitarist Matt van Duppen, who switched his role from the band's guitarist to the band's manager.[ 13] It debuts at number 4 on the Australian national albums chart .[ 14]
Dutch symphonic metal band Epica releases their ninth studio album, Aspiral . They started working on it in March 2024.[ 15] It debuts in the top 5 of 3 separate national album charts, including at number 2 on the Dutch national albums chart .
Swedish punk rock band Viagra Boys releases their fourth studio album, Viagr Aboys , their first since Cave World (2022).[ 16] It debuts in the top 10 of 2 separate national album charts, including at number 7 on the Swedish national albums chart .
Machine Head releases their eleventh studio album, Unatoned . It is their first studio album with new guitarist Reece Scruggs, who replaced the band's previous guitarist Wacław Kiełtyka in 2024.[ 17] It debuts in the top 10 of 3 separate national album charts .
Swedish rock band Ghost release their sixth studio album, Skeletá . It became their first album to top the US all-format Billboard 200 albums chart, the first rock album to top the chart in 2025, the first rock album to top the chart since October 2024's Moon Music by Coldplay , and the first hard rock album to top the chart since 2020's Power Up by AC/DC .[ 18]
Rise Against is set to release their tenth studio album, Ricochet , on August 15, 2025.[ 29]
Chevelle is set to release their tenth studio album, Bright as Blasphemy , on August 15, 2025.[ 30] It was originally set to release in October 2024.[ 31]
Deftones are scheduled to release their tenth studio album, Private Music , on August 22, 2025.[ 32] Work on the album began in early 2023, and will be their third album working with music producer Nick Raskulinecz .[ 33]
Canadian rock band Three Days Grace is set to release their eighth studio album, Alienation , on 22 August 2025. It will be their first studio album since Transit of Venus (2012) with original frontman Adam Gontier , who left the band in 2013, and returned to the band in 2024. He was replaced by Matt Walst , who will also remain a lead singer as well, making them a two-vocal band.[ 34]
Swedish garage rock band The Hives are set to release their seventh studio album, The Hives Forever Forever the Hives , on 29 August 2025.[ 35]
Canadian post-hardcore band Silverstein is set to release their 13th studio album, Pink Moon , on 12 September 2025. It will be the second part of a double album release, following Antibloom , which was released in early 2025.[ 36]
Twenty One Pilots is set to release their eighth studio album, Breach , on September 12, 2025. It is intended to conclude the conceptual series consisting of the band's previous four studio albums.[ 37]
Mammoth is scheduled to release their third studio album, titled The End , on October 24, 2025.[ 38] Frontman Wolfgang Van Halen stated that work on the album began in January 2024.[ 39]
Papa Roach is scheduled to release their twelfth studio album, their first since Ego Trip (2022). The band concurrently plans on celebrating the 25th anniversary of their breakout album Infest (2000) as well.[ 40]
Nine Inch Nails is scheduled to release new music, their first since the surprise dual release of Ghosts V and Ghosts VI (2020). At least some of the music was revealed to be part of Trent Reznor 's efforts to score the 2025 film Tron: Ares .[ 41] [ 42]
Motionless in White is scheduled to release their seventh studio album, their first since Scoring the End of the World (2022). The band is taking their time with its writing and recording, prioritizing quality over maintaining their momentum in popularity gains in the 2020s.[ 43]
Disturbed is scheduled to release their ninth studio album. In July 2024, guitarist Dan Donegan announced the band had begun work on recording a follow up to Divisive (2022).[ 44]
Five Finger Death Punch is scheduled to release their tenth studio album. In May 2024, guitarist Zoltan Bathory revealed the band had been recording a follow up to AfterLife (2022).[ 45]
Anthrax is set to release their twelfth studio album, their first since For All Kings (2016).[ 46] Bassist Frank Bello said their upcoming album will be "heavier than ever".[ 47]
English rock band Def Leppard is set to release their 13th studio album. After releasing a single titled "Just Like '73", guitarist Phil Collen said it was "the seed of a new Def Leppard album".[ 48]
French heavy metal band Gojira is set to release their eighth studio album. It will be their first studio album since Fortitude (2021), and since their live performance at the opening ceremony of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris , France .[ 49]
Welsh heavy metal band Bullet for My Valentine is set to release their eighth studio album, their first since their self-titled album (2021). They started working on it in 2024.[ 50]
Slipknot band members are scheduled to release an album. The album, Look Outside Your Window , was recorded by four of the band's members in 2008 during the band's lengthy All Hope Is Gone sessions. The album will have a more experimental and melodic rock sound as opposed to their traditional metal sound.[ 51] The band once aimed to release it in 2023 once band members were scheduled from their record label contract.[ 52] It was delayed to 2024 due to Corey Taylor 's commitment to his second solo album CMF2 in the second half of 2023, and then again to 2025.[ 53] [ 54]
Slipknot is also set to release their eighth studio album. It will be their first studio album with drummer Eloy Casagrande , who replaced the band's longtime drummer Jay Weinberg in 2023.[ 55]
Canadian rock band Finger Eleven is set to release their eighth studio album, Last Night on Earth . It will be their first studio album in a decade, since Five Crooked Lines (2015).[ 56]
Blondie is set to release their twelfth studio album, their first since Pollinator (2017).[ 57]
English rock band The Cure is set to release their 15th studio album. It will be the follow-up album to Songs of a Lost World (2024).[ 58]
Korn plans to release their fifteenth studio album. Members have stated that they aim to meld their "vintage" sound with a "modern twist", and that it's going into a heavier direction. The band concurrently plans on celebrating the 30th anniversary of their first album, Korn (1994).[ 59] [ 60]
Australian progressive rock band Karnivool has recorded an album's worth of material, which would be its first release in over a decade. Work on material began as early as 2016, but has progressed slowly due to all band members growing older, starting families, and living in different areas now. The band hasn't decided if material will be released as a full album, or broken up across multiple EPs.[ 61] [ 62]
The Pretty Reckless are scheduled to release their fifth studio album. Recording for the album began in mid-2023.[ 63]
Social Distortion is scheduled to release their eighth studio album. The band's follow-up to 2011's Hard Times and Nursery Rhymes was originally set for release in 2023, but vocalist and guitarist Mike Ness ' diagnosis with stage one tonsil cancer delayed the album's release.[ 64]
Limp Bizkit is working on their seventh studio album. The band plans to work on new material during sound checks because their 2024 touring schedule is so heavy.[ 65]
Former Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello is set to release his debut solo studio album.[ 66] It is his first album after the band abruptly disbanded in early January 2024.[ 67]
Breaking Benjamin is scheduled to release their seventh studio album, their first since 2018. Recording for the album began in either 2020 or 2021.[ 68]
Incubus completed their ninth studio album in 2025, and is scheduled to release it sometime within year end.[ 69]
Tours and festivals [ edit ]
Sonic Temple festival was held from May 8 to May 11, 2025. It was headlined by Linkin Park , Metallica , and Korn , and featured many other bands including Alice in Chains , Bullet for My Valentine , Bad Omens , and more.[ 70]
Welcome to Rockville was held from May 15 to May 18, 2025. It was headlined by Green Day , Linkin Park , Korn , and Shinedown , and featured many other bands including Bowling for Soup , Three Days Grace , Taking Back Sunday , Real Friends , and more.[ 71]
Slam Dunk festival was held on 24 and 25 May. It was headlined by Neck Deep , Electric Callboy , and A Day to Remember , and featured many other bands including Alkaline Trio , Hot Milk , Zebrahead , and more.[ 72]
Punk Rock Bowling Music Festival was held from May 24 to May 26, 2025. It was headlined by Social Distortion , Cock Sparrer , and Peter Hook & the Light , and featured many other bands including Fidlar , The Damned , Power Trip , The Interrupters , and more.[ 73]
Download Festival was held from 13 June to 15 June 2025. It was headlined by Green Day , Korn , and Sleep Token , and featured many other bands including Within Temptation , Sex Pistols , Steel Panther , Jimmy Eat World , and more.[ 74]
Warped Tour is set to return for the first time in six years to celebrate its 30th anniversary. Three festivals are set to take place in June, July, and November.[ 75]
English rock band Oasis reforms for the first time in 15 years for their Oasis Live '25 Tour . The announcement ends 15 years of bitter feuds between brothers Noel Gallagher and Liam Gallagher , who previously denied that any reunion would take effect.[ 76] [ 77] [ 78]
English heavy metal band Black Sabbath announces a reunion with all four original members for one final concert . It took place at Villa Park in Birmingham , England , on 5 July 2025.[ 79]
Louder Than Life festival is set to take place from September 18 to September 21, 2025. It will be headlined by Slayer , Avenged Sevenfold , Deftones , and Bring Me the Horizon .[ 80]
Riot Fest is set to take place from September 19 to September 21, 2025. It will be headlined by blink-182 , Green Day , and Weezer .[ 81]
Shaky Knees Music Festival is set to take place from September 19 to September 21, 2025. It will be headlined by blink-182 , My Chemical Romance , and Deftones , and will feature many other bands including Soft Play , Devo , Franz Ferdinand , Pixies , and more.[ 82]
Aftershock Festival is set to take place from October 2 to October 5, 2025. It will be headlined by blink-182 , Deftones , Korn , and Bring Me the Horizon .[ 83]
When We Were Young festival is set to be held on October 18, 2025. It will be headlined by blink-182 , and Panic! at the Disco , and will feature many other bands including The Story So Far , Holding Absence , Sleeping with Sirens , Weezer , and more.[ 84]
