On August 11, 2025, multiple explosions occurred at the Clairton Coke Works U.S. Steel plant in Clairton, Pennsylvania. Two people were killed and at least ten others were injured.[2][3][4][5] An initial explosion occurred at 10:51 am inside a coke battery operating area, inside the reversing room, between the 13th and 15th battery[6][7], and multiple secondary explosions were reported afterwards.[8] A fire broke out, but the plant was stable by the afternoon, with the plant and a vehicle damaged.[9][10]
Initially, one worker was was reported to be dead and one was missing, but after a search and rescue effort, the missing worker was also later found dead.[11][2] Ten injured workers were transported to local hospitals (UPMC Mercy[12] and Allegheny Health Network[2]) for care.[8][9] Many of the injuries were not life-threatening,[8] and five workers were discharged within a few hours.[11]
Allegheny County Health Department officials were monitoring air quality in the area and recommended that residents within one mile stay indoors, but did not detect a change in air quality above federal standards.[9][8] The order was lifted later in the day.[2]
